Yahya Shafiyuddin Hilmi - MATE Research
Overview
Yahya Shafiyuddin Hilmi is a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Economic and Regional Sciences, Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, starting the 2022/2023 academic year as an awardee of Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme. Yahya previously earned his bachelor and master degrees in agricultural economics from Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia.
His research focuses on sustainable palm oil and consumer behaviour in European context; hence, his research topics lies in sustainability and certification, palm oil issues, perspectives from European consumers, food labelling, and experimental designs. Through the theoretical work of his PhD research, he examines how sustainability labelling shapes European consumer preferences for foods containing sustainable palm oil, based on Icek Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behaviour and Schwartz’s Basic Human Values. His empirical work has contributed to asses these theories in settings ranging from different nationalities (e.g., Hungarian, Polish, Dutch, and British) and different consumer types (e.g., general consumers and university students) contexts. Throughout his work, he uses systematic literature review and experimental designs: discrete choice experiment and experimental auction to ensure a comprehensive study.
Following Yahya’s academic life, he is interested in both research and teaching. In regards to teaching, Yahya earned the study leave from Universitas Gadjah Mada where he serves as a university lecturer of the Department of Socioeconomics, Faculty of Agriculture. Currently, he has given the opportunity to be an external lecturer of the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences teaching Basic Knowledge of Economics and International Economics starting from the 2025/2026 academic year. On the other hand, as a researcher, he successfully published journal articles in high impact factor journals. Therefore, Yahya has been acknowledged as a reviewer of Scopus-indexed journals, and a speaker for research workshops several times following his academic experience.
