Overview

Dr. Rita Bán is an associate professor at the Department of Integrated Plant Protection in the Plant Protection Institute.. As a plant pathologist, her research focuses on pathogenic fungi, especially diseases of cereals and sunflower. She has been examining the pathotype composition of Plasmopara halstedii, the causal agent of sunflower downy mildew, for ten years. She identified several new pathotypes of sunflower downy mildew with her research group in Europe and Hungary. More recently, she has focused on fungicide sensitivity (tolerance) of P. halstedii and cereal pathogens, such as Zymoseptoria tritici and alternative protection methods against plant diseases.

Projects

Identification, dominance and distribution of sunflower downy mildew (Plasmopara halstedii) pathotypes in Hungary and Europe

The aim of the study was to provide up-to-date information on the composition and dominance of sunflower downy mildew pathotypes in Hungary and in Europe (Bulgaria, Serbia, Turkey, Greece, Romania and Italy) between 2012 and 2019. Our studies resulted in the identification of 18 new P. halstedii pathotypes from different areas.

 

Fungicide efficacy tests against foliar diseases of winter wheat, fungicide resistance of septoria leaf spot pathogen and its impact on the efficacy of field crop protection

These studies are related to the work of the EuroWheat research group of the ENDURE international project. The most important results include the demonstration of the efficacy, or even the reduction of efficacy, of several azole-containing fungicides, mainly against the pathogens of winter wheat leaf rust and septoria.

 

Comparative analysis of induced and genetic resistance mechanisms in two important pathogens of sunflower, Plasmopara halstedii (Farl.)Berl. et de Toni and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.)de Bary

The effect of different chemical (BTH, INA, BABA) and biological (mycorrhizal fungi) inducers were investigated against the most dangerous diseases of sunflower. In the sunflower - Plasmopara halstedii biotrophic relationship, BTH, INA and BABA increased the resistance of sunflowers. BTH and mycorrhiza treatment alone and in combination reduced infection caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum.
