Overview

Dr. Krisztián Milán Balogh's main research area is animal nutrition, nutritional physiology and toxicology. More specifically, he  focuses on the biological antioxidant system of animals, the effect of free radicals as well as the consequence of the oxidative stress caused by them. He investigates the amount and activity of  glutathione redox system and the parameters of  lipid peroxidation processes, as well as several clinical biochemical parameters in different animal tissues. He also examines the toxicity of selenium in poultry and fish species and in soil living organism (Collembola). Additionally, he studies the effect of different xenobiotics (mycotoxins and their metabolites, certain heavy metals) on lipid peroxidation and glutathione redox systems in vertebrate farm animals and laboratory animal species.

Projects

Project no. 1.: OTKA PD-104823/2013-2015 Evaluation of the effects of certain Fusarium toxins on gene expression, lipid peroxidation and the glutathione redox system in domestic fowl and carp (principal investigator: Dr. Krisztián Milán Balogh)

This research investigated the impact of two trichothecene mycotoxins, deoxynivalenol (DON) and T-2 toxin, produced by various Fusarium species on vertebrate farm animal species (domestic fowl and common carp), their production parameters, the glutathione redox system, a key part of the biological antioxidant defence system, the effect of free radicals on it and the consequence of the oxidative stress caused by them.

Project no. 2.: OTKA 116631/2015-2019 Monitoring of sterigmatocystin contamination in domestic feed and exploration of its biodetoxification potential (principal investigator: Dr. József Kukolya, co-researcher)

Sterigmatocystin, a geno- and cytotoxic mycotoxin is produced by Aspergillus moulds. In Hungary, there are hardly any data on the economic and health risks posed by the emergence of the climate change-induced sterigmatocystin-producing mould community. The two main goals of this project were sterigmatocystin monitoring and its biodegradation.
